  • Latin name: Musa acuminata microcarpa
  • Danish names: Abefingrebanan
  • English names: Monkey fingers banana

Musa acuminata microcarpa is a subspecies of Musa acuminata that originates from mountainous regions in Borneo. Its leaves have a yellow tint and the midrib (the center of the leaf) is almost chocolate brown. This banana plant produces long flowers with lots of small fruits. Since it originates from mountainous regions, it can tolerate slightly lower temperatures than other banana plants.

- The fruits can be eaten, but it is not recommended.

Seed germination

Scarify the seed lightly with fine sandpaper or a nail file. Then soak in warm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds afterwards in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Please note that the seeds can take up to 6 months to germinate!

Childcare

Best grown in a pot, even though it can tolerate low temperatures. Still needs to be brought indoors in winter.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably in some sun
- Prefers shelter from the wind
- Good, nutrient-rich, and well-draining soil
- Keep moist
- Fertilize during the growing season
