Strelitzia seeds
It is no secret that Strelitzia plants are one of our favorite plants. In fact, it is the flower of the Strelitzia reginae that graces our logo. There are at least 5 different species and a few different varieties in addition to these. Besides Strelitzia reginae and nicolai (which can sometimes be found in stores), the other species must be grown from seeds.

What is a Strelitzia?
Strelitzia is a group of plants with several different species, known in particular for their large leaves and striking growth habit.
They are often associated with tropical settings and have an aesthetic that resembles banana plants.
The most well-known types are:
- Strelitzia reginae – the classic bird of paradise with colorful flowers
- Strelitzia nicolai – a larger variety with more vigorous growth and light-colored flowers
Common to them all is that they add an exotic and almost architectural feel to the room.

Strelitzia vibe
Strelitzia is a plant that gets noticed. Its large leaves and upright growth make it particularly well-suited as a floor plant, where it can serve as a natural eye-catcher.
It fits well into both modern homes and greener interiors where you want plants with a bit more size and character. At the same time, it is constantly evolving, making it exciting to follow over time, and with good care, you are rewarded with the most beautiful flowers!

Care of Strelitzia
Many believe that the Strelitzia is difficult to care for, but that is often a misconception. When provided with the right conditions, it is generally a robust and rewarding plant.
The most important things are:- Plenty of light – preferably direct sunlight for periods
- Regular watering, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings
- Fertilizer during the growing season with good organic fertilizer
The Strelitzia cannot tolerate frost and should be kept indoors during the colder months, but can advantageously be placed outside during the summer season.
It is also worth knowing that the Strelitzia does not necessarily flower immediately. Many plants must be fully mature and have optimal light conditions before they produce flowers. On the other hand, it is decorative all year round – even without blooming.

Frequently asked questions about Strelitzia
Is Strelitzia difficult to care for?
Strelitzia is generally not difficult to care for when it gets the right conditions. In particular, it requires plenty of light and consistent watering. Once it is in a good spot, it is a robust plant that is easy to maintain over time.
Why is my Strelitzia not blooming?
It is quite normal for a Strelitzia not to bloom, especially if it is young or does not receive enough light. Flowering often requires a lot of light and a certain level of maturity in the plant. Many are therefore grown primarily for their large, decorative leaves. Strelitzia nicolai, in particular, must reach a certain size (several meters tall) before it begins to bloom.
Can Strelitzia be kept indoors all year round?
Yes, Strelitzia can be kept indoors all year round, as long as it gets enough light. It thrives best in a bright spot and can benefit from being moved outside during the summer months, but it is not necessary.
How much light does a Strelitzia need?
Strelitzia needs a lot of light and thrives best with direct sun at times. However, be careful with the harsh spring sun, which can scorch the leaves. Too little light will result in slower growth and make it more difficult for the plant to develop flowers.
How big does a Strelitzia get?
Strelitzia can become a large plant over time. Depending on the type, it can develop into a robust floor plant with large leaves and significant height. It grows gradually, but under good conditions, it can take up quite a bit of space. However, there is a big difference in how large the various species and varieties grow. Strelitzia nicolai can grow many meters high (up to 6 meters), Strelitzia reginae can reach approximately 2 meters in height, and the rare Strelitzia reginae "dwarf" only reaches approximately 1 meter.
