FROST TOLERANT

  • Latin name: Acca sellowiana
  • Danish names: Feijoa, pineapple guava
  • English names: Pineapple guava, feijoa

Acca sellowiana is one of the most exciting fruit shrubs from South America – prized for its unique, aromatic fruits, beautiful flowers, and surprising hardiness. The species originates from the highlands of Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, where it grows in a climate with warm summers and cool winters, making it far more robust than many other tropical fruit trees.

The leaves are oval, leathery, and beautifully silvery-gray on the underside, which provides a subtle, almost Mediterranean-like appearance. During the flowering period, the plant adorns itself with large, decorative flowers in white and deep pink, with long red stamens – flowers that are both beautiful and edible, with a sweet, aromatic taste.

The fruits are oval, green, and fragrant, with a firm, grainy flesh and a soft, sweet center. The taste is often described as a mix of pineapple, mint, strawberry, and guava – a truly exotic experience.

Cultivation and requirements:

Acca sellowiana is remarkably cold-tolerant and can withstand temperatures down to around –10 °C once established. It thrives best in:

  • Full sun to light partial shade
  • Well-drained soil, preferably sandy or slightly acidic
  • A warm, sheltered location, e.g., against a south-facing wall

In Denmark, it can be grown outdoors in mild regions, especially near the coast, but many choose to grow it in large pots so it can be overwintered in a sheltered place during cold winters. The plant tolerates drying out better than standing water and is generally very undemanding.

It forms a compact, evergreen shrub that tolerates pruning well and can therefore easily be kept in shape.

Cultivation from seeds:

The seeds are sown in a light, well-drained seed mix and covered only very lightly. They typically germinate at 20–25 °C after 3–6 weeks, but it can take significantly longer. Seedlings grow steadily and develop their characteristic silvery-gray leaves early on.

Be aware that seed-grown plants often show flavor variation, which for many is part of the charm – each plant becomes its own little unique feijoa.

Utility value:

Feijoa is one of the most delicious and aromatic fruits that can be grown in a pot in Denmark. The fruits are eaten fresh, used in smoothies, jams, desserts, or fermented into cider or wine.

The edible flowers are often used as garnish or in salads, and the plant also has high ornamental value year-round with its evergreen foliage and beautiful flowers.

Acca sellowiana is the perfect choice for those who want a hardy, exotic, and fruit-bearing plant – a true delicacy shrub that combines beauty, fragrance, and unique taste experiences in one and the same plant. 🌿🍈
