Can tolerate very light frost

  • Latin name: Annona reticulata
  • Danish names: Oksehjerte,
  • English names: Custard apple, ox heart, bullock's heart

Annona reticulata resembles the better-known Annona cherimola (also known as cherimoya or sugar apple). It most likely originates from the Caribbean or Central America, but is now cultivated all over the world. It does not tolerate drought quite as well as other Annona species, but can tolerate very light frost. In such cases, however, the leaves will fall off and new ones will appear when light and temperatures increase.

The fruits are sweet and good in desserts, but are not quite as popular as the fruits from Annona cherimola.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between layers of moist paper towel, which is then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a warm, bright location.

Childcare

Annona reticulata should be planted in a pot, as it does not tolerate much frost. In winter, it tends to lose its leaves, which then return with the light. If you wish to try keeping it outdoors all year round, it requires a sheltered growing site and winter covering.

- Place in a bright location, preferably in plenty of sun
- Prefers shelter from the wind
- Good, lean, and well-drained soil
- Fertilize during the growing season
