Can tolerate very light frost

  • Latin name: Annona squamosa
  • Danish names: Sukkeræble
  • English names: Sugar-apple, sweetsop

Annona squamosa is a popular fruit in many southern markets and is reportedly the most cultivated of the Annona species. In Denmark, however, it is only very rarely grown, and we have yet to see the fruits for sale anywhere.

The plant itself originates from South America, where it grows in tropical and subtropical climates. It therefore prefers good warmth and plenty of water during the growing season. If the temperature drops below 10°C, it will lose its leaves, much like many of the other Annona species.

The fruits are sweet and good in desserts, and are said to contain more vitamin C than oranges.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Childcare

Annona squamosa must be planted in a pot, as it does not tolerate frost. It can be kept outdoors in the summer and indoors in the winter. This is how we store our plants. In the winter, it tends to shed its leaves, which then grow back with the light.
