  • Latin name: Passiflora citrina
  • Danish names: Citrina passionflower, passionflower
  • English names: Passionflower

Passiflora citrina is an unknown but exceptionally beautiful and fascinating passionflower that impresses with its clear lemon-yellow flowers and compact, climbing growth. This unique species originates from Central America, specifically from the tropical regions of Honduras and Guatemala, where it thrives in the humid climate of the forest areas.

Appearance

Passiflora citrina is known for its beautiful, star-shaped flowers, which stand out with their vibrant yellow color. The flowers typically measure about 5-7 cm in diameter, and the elegant, slender petals surround a detailed center. Flowering usually occurs in late summer and autumn, but the plant can also bloom at other times under optimal conditions. In general, it blooms easily and can be in flower almost all year round if kept indoors.

The plant has a climbing and bushy growth habit and can grow up to 2-3 meters tall. The leaves are dark green, deeply lobed, and provide a lush appearance that supports the radiant flowers.

Care

Passiflora citrina is relatively easy to care for but requires certain conditions to thrive optimally:

Light conditions: Thrives best in bright indirect sunlight but can also handle direct sunlight for shorter periods. In the dark winter months, supplementary lighting may be necessary.

Temperature: Since it originates from tropical regions, it prefers warm temperatures. Ideally, it should be kept between 18-24°C, and it does not tolerate frost.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid overwatering. Let the top layer of soil dry out slightly between waterings. In the winter months, watering should be reduced.

Humidity: As a tropical plant, Passiflora citrina loves high humidity. It can be advantageous to place it in a room with 50-70% humidity or use a humidifier.

Pruning: If the plant becomes too straggly, it can be pruned after flowering to promote denser growth and more flowers.

Fertilizer: Should be fertilized with regular houseplant fertilizer during the growing season (April - October)

Passiflora citrina is a fantastic addition to any collection of exotic plants and, with its golden flowers, will bring a touch of tropical beauty to both the home and the greenhouse.
