TOLERATES BRIEF FROST
  • Latin name: Musa sikkimensis "Manipur Massive"
  • Danish names: Himalaya-banan, Himalaya banan
  • English names: Hardy banana, Manipur Massive banana

Musa sikkimensis 'Manipur Massive' is an impressive cultivar of the Himalayan banana – known for its robustness and ability to withstand cooler climates better than most other banana species. This variant from the Manipur region of India is distinguished by being particularly vigorous and tall-growing, making it a spectacular sight in any garden or collection.

The plant develops sturdy, upright pseudostems that can reach a height of 4–5 meters under favorable conditions. The large banana leaves have a fresh green color, often with beautiful reddish stripes or tones, adding extra ornamental value. Like other Musa species, it rarely produces edible fruits in our climate, but it is primarily grown as an ornamental plant for its tropical appearance and impressive size.

Cultivation and requirements:

Musa sikkimensis 'Manipur Massive' is one of the hardiest bananas and, once established, can tolerate brief periods of frost down to around -10 °C if thoroughly winter-protected. It thrives best in full sun to light shade and in nutrient-rich, moisture-retentive, but well-drained soil.

In Denmark, it can be advantageously grown outdoors in sheltered gardens or in large pots that can be moved to shelter during winter. Above-ground parts may freeze back during harsh winters, but the plant usually shoots readily again from the root when spring arrives.

Cultivation from seed:

The seeds are hard and require pre-treatment. It is recommended to lightly scarify the seed coat and then soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 48–72 hours. Then sow in a moist, well-drained seed compost (e.g., coconut fiber and perlite) and keep warm at 25–30 °C. Germination can take from 3 weeks to several months, and patience is an important part of the process.

Utility:

Although the fruits are rarely edible in our climate, 'Manipur Massive' is especially valued for its ornamental appeal. It adds a strong tropical touch to gardens and terraces and is one of the few banana species that can overwinter outdoors in Denmark with proper care.

Musa sikkimensis 'Manipur Massive' is the perfect choice for garden owners and collectors who want a large, exotic plant with both drama and hardiness. A banana with real gravitas!

Seed germination

Lightly scratch the seed with fine sandpaper or a nail file. Then soak in warm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between sheets of damp paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Please note that it can take up to 6 months for the seeds to germinate!

Childcare

Although it can withstand low temperatures, it is best grown in a pot. If you want to try growing it outdoors, it must be well covered in winter. Here it will die back completely and then sprout again in the spring.
