Monstera deliciosa is one of the most beloved and recognizable houseplants in the world – known for its large, glossy, dark green leaves with characteristic holes and deep incisions. It originates from the humid tropical forests of Central America, where it grows as a climbing plant, winding its way up tree trunks with its aerial roots.
The name deliciosa refers to the plant's edible fruit, which in its natural habitat ripens into an aromatic fruit with a flavor reminiscent of a blend of pineapple and banana. However, the fruit is rare in houseplant culture, as the plant does not usually bloom or produce fruit indoors.
Cultivation and requirements:
Monstera deliciosa is easy to grow and thrives in most homes, making it a classic in the world of houseplants. It prefers a bright location without direct, harsh sun, but also tolerates light shade. The soil should be porous, well-drained, and slightly moist – preferably a mix of soil, coconut fiber, and perlite. We recommend our specialty Aroid soil
The plant appreciates high humidity and regular watering, but should not sit in water. It grows best when given the opportunity to climb – e.g., with a moss pole or other support where its aerial roots can attach.
Cultivation from seeds:
Seeds of Monstera deliciosa are relatively large and sprout fairly quickly if they are fresh. They should be sown in moist, well-drained soil and kept at a temperature of 22–28 °C. Germination usually occurs within 2–4 weeks. Initially, the small plants develop whole leaves without holes – the iconic, incised leaves only appear later as the plant matures.
Utility:
Beyond its immense ornamental value, Monstera deliciosa also has a culinary side in its natural habitat, where the ripe fruit is harvested and eaten. As an ornamental plant, however, it is primarily a true design classic – a living green interior element that adds both drama and a tropical atmosphere to the home.
