FOR THE COLLECTOR

  • Latin name: Tacca chantrieri
  • Danish names: Black bat flower
  • English names: Black bat flower

Tacca chantrieri, also known as the black bat flower, is a spectacular and exotic plant native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia – particularly Thailand, Malaysia, and southern China. The plant grows naturally in shaded, humid forest areas where humidity is high and temperatures are stable.

It is especially known for its dramatic flowers, which can resemble a bat with outstretched wings. The dark, almost black flowers are surrounded by large, scale-like bracts and long, thread-like appendages that can hang down up to 30 cm – an appearance that is both mysterious and alluring. The plant also forms large, glossy, dark green leaves, which provide a lush and tropical look.

Tacca chantrieri thrives best in partial shade and requires high humidity, consistently moist and well-drained soil, and temperatures that do not fall below 15 °C. It prefers a soil mix with coconut fiber, sphagnum peat, and perlite, which ensures both moisture and air for the roots. We recommend our Alocasia soil. It is recommended to keep the plant in a stable, protected environment such as a greenhouse, conservatory, or indoors under tropical conditions.

This species is sometimes confused with Tacca integrifolia, which has white flowers with large, violet bracts, but Tacca chantrieri is the more dramatic of the two with its deep, dark color and more compact appearance.

The bat flower is ideal for collectors and plant enthusiasts who want a very special and rare plant.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand. The seeds need good warmth to germinate. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of moist kitchen roll (the baggie method), which is then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a warm, bright spot.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil (preferably mixed with a little sand and orchid bark). Can be placed on a tray with stones and water (or similar) to increase humidity.

- Place in a bright spot, but out of direct sunlight
- Soil (fine bark : peat : sand | 5 : 4 : 1)
- Water abundantly, but requires good soil drainage
- Requires high humidity
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Ideal for the bathroom
