RARE
- Latin name: Licuala aurantiaca
- Danish names: Gylden licuala palme
- English names: Golden licuala palm
Licuala aurantiaca is one of the rarer species in the coveted Licuala genus – known and loved for its almost circular fan leaves and its compact, elegant appearance. While many Licuala species are green and shade-loving, L. aurantiaca stands out with a little more color: the young leaf sheaths and inflorescences often have a warm, orange hue, which has given the species its name.
The plant is native to the humid tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia and grows naturally in shady, sheltered areas where it thrives in high humidity and heat. It forms a low trunk and develops broad, fan-shaped leaves with deep segments, which provide an almost architectural look.
Cultivation and requirements:
Licuala aurantiaca thrives best in warm and humid conditions, preferably in partial shade. It is perfectly suited for cultivation in a greenhouse, orangery, or indoors in large pots – preferably with high humidity and a constant temperature above 18 °C. The soil should be well-drained but moisture-retentive, e.g., a mix of coir, sphagnum moss, and perlite.
Watering should be done regularly without the soil becoming waterlogged. The plant is slow-growing and can be slightly sensitive when young, but rewards the patient grower with great beauty and elegance.
Cultivation from seed:
Seeds of Licuala aurantiaca should be sown as fresh as possible. Remove any fruit pulp and soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 48–72 hours before sowing. Sow in a deep pot with moist, well-drained seed soil and keep the temperature at 28–30 °C. Using a mini-greenhouse or plastic cover is recommended to ensure high humidity. Germination can take from 1 to 3 months – or longer – so patience is crucial.
Utility:
Although the plant does not have traditional utility as a food source, it is used in its home country for small-scale basket weaving and as a shade plant. In collector circles and botanical gardens, it is considered a true gem – rare, beautiful, and full of character.
Licuala aurantiaca is an obvious choice for the dedicated palm enthusiast who wants something special and discreetly eye-catching – a compact, tropical jewel with charm and grace. See also our entire collection of palm seeds for other exciting species.
