EXTREMELY RARE

  • Latin name: Chambeyronia houailouensis
  • Danish names: Houailou Rødbladet Palme
  • English names: Flame Thrower Palm (often used for the genus), Houailou Red Leaf Palm

We have succeeded in obtaining a few seeds of this fantastic, beautiful, and very rare palm. Unfortunately, they are available in very limited numbers.

NOTE: The seeds must be sown immediately upon receipt.

Chambeyronia houailouensis is a very rare palm from the Houaïlou region of New Caledonia and is considered by many collectors to be one of the most exclusive species in the genus. Just like the better-known Chambeyronia macrocarpa, the species is famous for its spectacular new leaves, which often emerge in vibrant shades of red, bronze, or pink.

The palm grows naturally in humid tropical forests, where it develops a slender trunk and a crown of large, elegant, pinnate leaves. The colorful new leaves provide a beautiful contrast to the older dark green leaves and make each new growth period something special.

Although the two species are very similar, Chambeyronia houailouensis remains significantly rarer in cultivation than Chambeyronia macrocarpa. Its rarity and limited availability have made the species particularly sought after among dedicated palm collectors.

Cultivation and requirements

Chambeyronia houailouensis thrives best in bright, filtered light or light semi-shade and prefers:

  • Well-drained but moisture-retentive soil
  • Even moisture without sitting in water
  • High humidity
  • Warm conditions

Well-drained palm soil or tropical plant soil with high organic content is suitable. During the growing season, it can be beneficial to supplement with a mild organic fertilizer to support healthy growth and beautiful leaves.

The palm is not frost-tolerant and, in Denmark, is best suited for indoor cultivation, in a greenhouse, or a conservatory. The temperature should be kept stable above 15 °C, and it thrives best at even higher temperatures during the growing season.

Since the species originates from humid forest environments, it does not like drying out and is best kept in a protected location without direct, harsh midday sun.

Cultivation from seeds

Seeds of Chambeyronia houailouensis require warmth and patience to germinate. For the best result, we recommend:

  • Soaking in lukewarm water for 1–3 days
  • Sowing in a well-drained, slightly moist soil mix
  • A temperature of 25–30 °C
  • Constant, light moisture without overwatering

Germination can be slow and irregular, typically taking 1–3 months, sometimes longer. The young plants grow slowly but gradually develop their characteristic leaves.

Utility and collector value

Chambeyronia houailouensis is grown primarily as an ornamental and collector's palm. It is particularly the combination of its rarity, its origin in New Caledonia, and the spectacular new leaves that have made the species sought after by palm enthusiasts.

For collectors, the species represents an opportunity to grow one of the more exclusive members of the Chambeyronia genus. While many dream of Chambeyronia macrocarpa, Chambeyronia houailouensis is often the choice for those who want something even rarer in their collection.

Chambeyronia houailouensis is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow a rare and exotic palm from seed – an elegant species with spectacular new leaves and a very high collector value.

Seed germination

Remove the outer layer of the seeds. Sand them lightly if necessary. Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 1-3 days until the shell begins to soften. Change the water every day. Then sow the seeds in moist seed-starting soil or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Note that palm seeds can generally take a long time to germinate.

Childcare

This rare and majestic palm must be grown in a pot as it cannot tolerate frost. It can be kept outdoors during the summer. It prefers warmth.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably full to partial sun
- Rich, well-draining soil (preferably with a little sand)
- Water well during the growing season
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Cannot tolerate frost
