  • Latin name: Tacca chantrieri "Nivea"
  • Danish names: Hvid flagermusblomst
  • English names: White bat flower, white Tacca

Tacca chantrieri 'Nivea', also known as the white bat flower, is a rare and breathtaking tropical plant, particularly known for its unusual, pure white flowers. This cultivar is a variant of the classic dark Tacca chantrieri and is native to the humid rainforests of Southeast Asia – particularly Thailand, Malaysia, and southern China. In nature, it grows in shaded, warm forest areas with high humidity and frequent rainfall.

Unlike the dark form, 'Nivea' showcases a dramatic white inflorescence, often with a slight silvery sheen and long, thread-like "whiskers" that can hang down like decorative veils. The plant forms large, glossy, dark green leaves that create a beautiful contrast to the light flowers.

A closely related species, Tacca integrifolia, also produces white flowers, but differs distinctly with its large, violet bracts above the inflorescence and a more upright, distinctive growth habit. While Tacca integrifolia often appears more robust and coarse, Tacca chantrieri 'Nivea' appears more graceful with its elegant lines and delicate details.

Tacca chantrieri 'Nivea' thrives best in high humidity, consistently moist (but well-drained) soil, and a spot in partial shade. It should be grown in an airy soil mix, preferably with coconut fiber, peat moss, and perlite. We recommend our Alocasia soil. The temperature should not drop below 15 °C, and the plant appreciates stable growth conditions without large fluctuations.

This exotic plant is ideal for collectors and plant enthusiasts who want something truly special. Tacca chantrieri 'Nivea' is not just a plant – it is a living work of art with roots in the tropical jungle.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand. The seeds need good heat to germinate. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between moist paper towels (the bag-germination method), which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm spot.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil (preferably mixed with a little sand and orchid bark). Can be placed on a tray with stones and water (or similar) to increase humidity.

- Place in a bright spot, but away from direct sunlight
- Soil (fine bark : peat : sand | 5 : 4 : 1)
- Plenty of water, but requires good soil drainage
- Requires high humidity
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Perfect for the bathroom
