English names: White bat flower, black lily
Tacca integrifolia, also known as the white bat flower, is a fascinating tropical plant native to the humid rainforests of Southeast Asia, including India, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It grows naturally in shady and warm forest areas, where the humidity is high and the soil is rich in organic matter.
The plant is known for its large, eye-catching flowers, which consist of white, wing-shaped bracts and a cluster of purple to dark purple small flowers in the center. The flower is surrounded by long, thread-like appendages, which can grow up to 40 cm long and contribute to the characteristic, almost otherworldly appearance that has given the plant its name.
Tacca integrifolia differs from Tacca chantrieri in its lighter and more contrasting flower color, as well as generally more vigorous growth. Where chantrieri has dark, almost black flowers, integrifolia is more upright and open in its expression with white bracts and a distinct inflorescence.
The plant thrives best in partial shade and requires high humidity, regular watering, and well-drained, airy soil – preferably a mixture of coconut fiber, peat moss, and perlite. We recommend our Alocasia soil. The temperature should be kept above 15 °C year-round, and it is best suited for cultivation in a greenhouse, conservatory, or in tropical rooms with stable heat and moisture.
Tacca integrifolia is a spectacular ornamental plant for the dedicated collector and, with its dramatic flowers and impressive foliage, will be a natural conversation piece in any exotic plant collection. A true jewel for those who appreciate the rare and botanically remarkable.
