PRODUCES SEMI-EDIBLE FRUIT
  • Latin name: Musa sikkimensis
  • Danish names: Darjeeling banana
  • English names: Darjeeling banana

The Darjeeling banana, or Musa sikkimensis in Latin, originates from Bhutan and India and is one of the banana varieties that grows at the highest altitudes (up to 2000m above sea level). It is therefore possible to keep it outdoors. In freezing temperatures, however, the plant itself will die back and then shoot again in the spring. If you want large and flowering plants, it requires the plants themselves to survive the winter (i.e., the temperature should preferably not drop below 5 degrees).

The leaves are large and green on the top, and reddish on the underside.

- The fruits are small and edible, but unfortunately filled with small seeds, making them less suitable for eating

Seed germination

Lightly scarify the seed with fine sandpaper or a nail file. Then, soak in warm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of damp paper towel inside a sealed bag. Place in a warm, bright spot.

Note that it can take up to 6 months for the seeds to germinate!

Childcare

Although it can handle low temperatures, it is best to grow it in a pot. If you want to try keeping it outdoors, it must be well covered in winter. Here, it will die back completely and then sprout again in the spring.

- Place in a bright spot with partial sun
- Prefers shelter from the wind
- Good, nutrient-rich, and well-draining soil
- Keep moist
- Fertilize during the growing season
