- Latin name: Nepenthes alata

English names: Pitcher plant, monkey cup
Nepenthes alata is a classic pitcher plant native to the Philippines. It is one of the easiest Nepenthes species to care for and does well as a houseplant in a bright spot with occasional misting. It is therefore an excellent beginner plant.
Pitcher plants do not need to be kept as wet as many other carnivorous plants. However, the soil must never dry out completely. As with other carnivorous plants, pitcher plants do not like lime in the water. Therefore, use rainwater or demineralized water.
Note: In winter, the plant may stop producing new pitchers. This is a natural reaction to the lower light levels and humidity. It will start forming pitchers again in the spring.
- REMEMBER the right soil: Carnivorous plant soil.
