  • Latin name: Capparis spinosa "Inermis"
  • Danish names: Tornefri Kapers
  • English names: Spineless capers, caper bush, Flinders rose

Both capers and caper berries come from this small Mediterranean plant/shrub. The plant is thought to originate from the Mediterranean region, but it has been cultivated for so long that researchers are not entirely sure of its origin.

The plant is a small, robust shrub with thick leaves that produces large, beautiful white/pink flowers. Unfortunately, capers can be difficult to care for and are often mentioned as one of the hardest plants to both germinate and thrive. If you are up for the challenge, however, the reward is great. Note that this is a variant called "inermis," which is distinguished by being a spineless variety.

Both the flower buds (capers) and the fruits (caper berries) are edible and are most commonly found pickled or salted.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil, and place the pot in the greenhouse in early spring. They require this "stratification" to wake up. The small plants grow slowly and have rather delicate roots.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil (preferably mixed with a little sand).

- Place in full sun
- Can tolerate slight drying out
- Must be placed in a sheltered spot
- Fertilize during the growing season
