VERY RARE

  • Latin name: Arisaema speciosum
  • Danish names: Kobralilje, arisaema
  • English names: Cobra lily

- Note: These are dormant tubers.

Arisaema concinnum is an elegant and distinctive tuberous plant from the Himalayas and northern India. It grows naturally in moist mountain forests and meadows at altitudes where the climate is cooler than in the tropics. As a member of the arum family (Araceae), it is related to both Amorphophallus and Dracunculus, but has a more refined and light expression.

This species is particularly valued among collectors and garden owners who want an exotic plant for shade beds and woodland gardens.

Appearance and flowering

Arisaema concinnum forms a characteristic inflorescence with a beautifully striped spathe in shades of green, purple, or brownish tones. The upright spadix is often long and slender, giving the plant a dramatic, almost sculptural expression – typical of cobra lilies.

After flowering, palmately divided leaves develop, giving the plant an elegant and tropical touch. The height is typically between 50 and 100 cm, depending on the growing site and nutrition. Later in the season, the plant can develop decorative red berries, which provide extra ornamental value in late summer.

Difference from other Arisaema species

Compared to Arisaema speciosum, A. concinnum often has a more upright and less "tail-like" floral appearance. It generally appears slightly more compact and harmonious in its growth, making it particularly suitable for smaller gardens and more controlled plantings.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Partial shade to woodland shade.
  • Temperature: Hardy in Denmark in a well-drained location with winter mulch.
  • Soil: Humus-rich, well-drained, and slightly moist soil – preferably with leaf mold.
  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season. Avoid waterlogged soil in winter.
  • Overwintering: Can overwinter in the garden in well-drained soil. In very wet areas, light covering or lifting is recommended.
  • Fertilizer: Mild organic fertilizer in the spring promotes healthy growth.

Garden use

Arisaema concinnum is ideal for shade gardens, woodland beds, and exotic plantings. It combines a tropical appearance with good cold tolerance and fits perfectly with ferns, hostas, and other woodland plants.

Arisaema concinnum is a refined cobra lily with character and elegance – an exciting tuberous plant for collectors and garden owners who want something unusual in the shade garden.

Childcare

When you receive the tuber, it should be kept in a dry and dark place. Once it begins to sprout and the growth point is a few centimeters long, the tuber should be planted: Place the tuber in a pot with good soil, about 10 cm deep, with the growth point facing upwards. Keep the soil well-moistened.

Can actually be planted outdoors if the soil is well-drained. During wet periods, it is recommended to cover the tuber or dig it up.

- Place in bright to partial shade (no direct sunlight)
- Good nutrient-rich and well-drained soil
- Water well during the growth period
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Requires a dry dormant period once the plant dies back
