English names: California pitcher plant, cobra lily, cobra plant
- NOTE: these are small plants, 6-7 cm tall
This is an exciting and unique carnivorous plant originating from Northern California. In appearance, it is somewhat reminiscent of common Sarracenia species and is related to them. However, the "funnel" itself ends in a nodding head with a forked "fishtail." This appearance has also given the plant the name cobra lily, as it can resemble a cobra with its fangs.
In nature, the cobra lily typically lives in nutrient-poor soil permeated by cold water. It grows here in full sun. In winter, it can survive frost. Just like with Sarracenia species, "hunting" for prey occurs when flies or other insects wander into the funnel, fall down, and are slowly dissolved.
In Denmark, it can be kept in an unheated greenhouse, provided the winter does not get too cold and the summer not too hot.
