Danish names: Kretisk daddelpalme

English names: Cretan date palm, Theophrastus’ date palm
Phoenix theophrasti is a rare and very fascinating date palm from Crete and the eastern Mediterranean. The species is particularly known for its natural populations on Crete, where it grows in dry, warm, and coastal areas, and is considered Europe's only native date palm.
The palm develops a sturdy trunk and stiff, silver-green to blue-green pinnate leaves, which give it a distinct Mediterranean character. Compared to Phoenix canariensis and Phoenix dactylifera, Phoenix theophrasti often has a more compact and robust appearance, as well as better tolerance to drought and wind.
The species is particularly interesting for palm enthusiasts, as it combines an exotic look with a degree of cold tolerance and great botanical significance.

Cultivation and requirements
Phoenix theophrasti thrives best in full sun and prefers:
- very well-drained, preferably sandy or mineral-rich soil
- moderate watering
- warm and airy conditions
A well-drained palm soil with high mineral content is ideal. During the growing season, you can supplement with a mild, organic palm or Mediterranean fertilizer to support healthy growth.
The species is more cold-tolerant than many tropical palms and, as an established plant, can withstand light frost, especially in dry soil. In Denmark, however, it is best grown as a container plant or in a very sheltered and well-drained location.
Winter moisture is often a greater challenge than the cold itself, and the plant should therefore be protected against prolonged wet winter conditions.
Cultivation from seeds
Phoenix theophrasti seeds germinate best under warm conditions. For the best results, we recommend:
- soaking in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours
- sowing in a well-drained soil mix
- a temperature of 25–30 °C
- keeping the soil evenly moist, but not wet
Germination typically occurs within 1–6 months, but can be irregular. The young plants first develop simple leaves before later producing the characteristic pinnate palm leaves.
Utility and collector value
Phoenix theophrasti is primarily grown as an ornamental and collector's palm. The species is especially valued among palm collectors for its rarity, its Mediterranean feel, and its botanical history.
For enthusiasts of hardy or subtropical palms, it is an exciting alternative to more common Phoenix species. See also our entire collection of palm seeds for other exciting species.
Phoenix theophrasti is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow a rare and characterful palm right from seed – a species with a Mediterranean atmosphere, elegant growth, and high collector value.
