Monstera dubia is an unusual and highly sought-after species in the monstera genus, known for its striking juvenile growth form, which differs significantly from the classic Monstera deliciosa. In nature, it grows in the rainforests of Central and South America, where it climbs closely up tree trunks and rocks using its aerial roots.
As a young plant, Monstera dubia has flat, heart-shaped leaves with beautiful silver-green patterns that lie completely flat against the surface – a phenomenon known as "shingling." This growth form gives the plant an almost graphic and mosaic-like appearance. As the plant matures and is given the opportunity to climb freely, it changes character significantly: the leaves become larger, thicker, and begin to develop the characteristic holes (fenestration) known from other Monstera species.
Cultivation and requirements:
Monstera dubia thrives best in a bright location without direct, harsh sun, where its leaves maintain their beautiful markings. It prefers an airy, well-drained soil, such as aroid soil.
The plant is a distinct climbing plant and develops best if given a background, moss pole, or board to grow up. High humidity promotes the flat, dense juvenile growth and results in healthier leaves. The temperature should be kept above 15 °C, and the plant does not tolerate frost.
In Denmark, Monstera dubia is grown as a houseplant, terrarium plant, in display cabinets, or in rooms with stable heat and humidity.
Cultivation from seed:
Sow the seeds in a light, moist, and well-drained seed compost and cover them very lightly. Maintain a temperature of 22–28 °C and ensure high humidity. Germination typically occurs after 2–6 weeks. The seedlings quickly form the characteristic flat leaves that adhere to the surface if given the opportunity.
Utility:
Monstera dubia has no traditional utility, but is highly valued as an ornamental plant and collector's item. Its striking difference between juvenile and mature leaves makes it one of the most fascinating Monstera species, both botanically and visually.
Monstera dubia is an obvious choice for plant enthusiasts who want something more unusual than the classic monsteras – a plant with a distinct personality and a dramatic development that rewards patience and proper support. 🌿
