HARDY

  • Latin name: Phormium tenax
  • Danish names: New Zealandsk hør, hørlilje
  • English names: New Zealand flax

Phormium tenax, also known as flax lily or New Zealand flax, is an impressive and hardy plant originating from the coastal regions of New Zealand. It is famous for its long, sword-shaped leaves that form a dramatic and architectural clump, which can grow up to 2–3 meters in height and width. The leaves vary in color from fresh green to bronze-red and are available in many varieties with exciting striped or multicolored patterns.

When the plant blooms, it sends up sturdy, upright flower stalks reaching up to 4 meters in height, covered in tubular, red-orange flowers. These are particularly rich in nectar and attract birds, bees, and butterflies – in New Zealand, it is an important food source for nectar-seeking birds such as the tui and bellbird.

Cultivation and requirements:

Phormium tenax thrives in full sun to partial shade and in well-drained but moisture-retentive soil. It is hardy and can withstand down to about -5 to -10 °C, especially if it is sheltered and the soil is not waterlogged. In Denmark, it can be overwintered outdoors in mild regions with protection, but in colder areas, it is recommended to grow it in large pots that can be moved indoors or kept frost-free during the winter.

The plant requires minimal care, but regular watering during the growing season and removing dead leaves keeps it looking attractive and vital.

Cultivation from seed:

Seeds are sown in spring or early summer in a well-drained seed mix. They should be lightly covered with soil, kept moist, and at a temperature of 18–22 °C. Germination typically occurs after 3–6 weeks. The seedlings quickly develop their characteristic, sword-shaped leaves and can be planted out when they are robust enough.

Utility:

In New Zealand, Phormium tenax has for centuries been of great importance to the Māori, who used the fibers from the leaves for rope, baskets, textiles, and mats. Today, it is primarily an ornamental plant, valued for its architectural expression, hardiness, and ability to give gardens an exotic touch.

Phormium tenax is a fantastic plant for gardeners who want something both dramatic and robust – an elegant combination of beauty, strength, and cultural history.

- Also available in a variegated version

Seed germination

Place the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds directly into moist seed starting soil or cactus soil. The soil must be kept well-moistened during germination. After 1 year, they can be planted out. Preferably protect them with straw or spruce branches for the first few winters.
