  • Latin name: Amorphophallus paeoniifolius
  • Danish names: Elephant yam, penis plant
  • English names: Elephant foot yam, whitespot giant arum

Elephant foot yam is a widespread crop grown in large parts of Asia. It is the large tubers that are most often boiled and mashed or deep-fried. Due to its wide distribution as a crop, it is not entirely certain where the species originally originates from. However, new DNA studies suggest that its origin is on the islands of Southeast Asia, from where it then spread westward.

The tubers are round and the flowers are bizarre, large and purple.

- Every once in a while, we also have plants for sale here.

NOTE: The seeds must not dry out!

Seed germination

The seeds arrive already moist. Sow the seeds directly into moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with good potting soil. Increase the pot size each year as the tuber grows. When the leaf dies back, the tuber can be dug up and kept dry until new growth is visible. It should also be kept dry if you leave the tuber in the pot.
