  • Latin name: Musa sikkimensis "Red Tiger"
  • Danish names: Red tiger banana
  • English names: Hardy banana, red tiger banana

Musa sikkimensis "Red Tiger" is a special variety of Darjeeling banana, known for its striking red markings on the fresh, green leaves. These characteristic stripes and patterns give the plant an eye-catching, exotic flair and make it one of the most decorative banana plants, while also having the hardiness to cope with the Danish climate better than most other species.

The plant can reach a height of 3–4 meters under good conditions and develops strong pseudostems, which support the magnificent foliage with their reddish hue. It is primarily grown as an ornamental plant, as the fruits rarely develop fully in our climate, but its tropical appearance makes it a true jewel in the garden or on the patio.

Cultivation and requirements:

"Red Tiger" thrives best in full sun to light partial shade and in nutrient-rich, moisture-retentive, yet well-drained soil. It is one of the hardiest bananas and—with thorough winter protection—can withstand brief temperatures down to around -10 °C. In harsh winters, it may die back, but it will usually shoot again from the root in the spring.

It is suitable both for open ground in sheltered gardens and for growing in large pots that can be moved to shelter or overwintered frost-free. Regular watering during the growing season and a good dose of nutrients promote rapid growth and large leaves.

Cultivation from seeds:

The seeds are hard and require pre-treatment. It is recommended to lightly sand or file the seed coat and then soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 48–72 hours. Sow in a well-drained, moist seed compost (e.g., coconut fiber and perlite) and keep at a temperature of 25–30 °C. Germination can take anywhere from 3 weeks to several months, so patience is necessary.

Utility value:

Although the fruits are not edible here, 'Red Tiger' has great value as an ornamental plant. It provides a strong tropical impression, and the red leaf markings make it one of the most sought-after bananas among collectors and garden owners.

Musa sikkimensis 'Red Tiger' is a perfect choice for those who want to combine hardiness with a spectacular, tropical look in the garden. A banana that truly stands out.

- Also available (sometimes) as a plant

Seed germination

Lightly scarify the seed with fine sandpaper or a nail file. Then soak in warm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between layers of damp paper towel and put them in a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm location.

Please note that it can take up to 6 months for the seeds to germinate!

Childcare

Although it can handle low temperatures, it is best to grow it in a pot. If you want to try keeping it outdoors, it must be well-covered in winter. It will die back completely and then sprout again in the spring.
