RARE SUBSPECIES | REQUIRES WARMTH AND SPACE

  • Latin name: Ravenala madagascariensis subsp. honkondambo
  • Danish names: Traveller's palm (rare subspecies)
  • English names: Traveller's tree, traveller's palm, East-West palmariensis

Ravenala madagascariensis subsp. honkondambo is a rare and botanically interesting subspecies of the well-known traveller's palm from Madagascar. Where the classic form often grows in more open landscapes, honkondambo occurs primarily in humid lowland and rainforests, where it is adapted to more stable, shaded conditions.

Compared to the common Ravenala madagascariensis, subsp. honkondambo typically has a more slender and upright growth pattern, often with darker green leaves and a more elegant, forest-adapted appearance. The plant generally appears less massive and more compact in growth, especially in the juvenile stage. The leaves still sit in the characteristic fan shape, but the angle is often narrower and more vertical. The subspecies is considered rare in cultivation and is particularly sought after among collectors.

Cultivation and requirements

Ravenala subsp. honkondambo thrives best in very bright but preferably filtered sun, which reflects its natural habitat in forest environments. It prefers:

  • nutrient-rich, moisture-retaining but well-drained soil
  • even watering throughout the growing season
  • high humidity
  • stable warmth

The plant is not frost-tolerant and is grown in Denmark as a potted plant. It can be kept outdoors during the summer months in a warm, sheltered spot, but must be overwintered in a bright, frost-free location. The temperature should ideally be kept above 12–15 °C year-round.

Cultivation from seed (important)

This species is grown almost exclusively from seed, and it is important to be prepared for the fact that germination can be slow and uneven. The seeds are large and hard-shelled, and patience is an essential part of the process.

For the best possible result, we recommend:

  • soaking the seeds in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours before sowing
  • sowing in an airy, well-drained soil mix
  • constant warmth of 25–30 °C
  • keeping the soil slightly moist, but never wet

Germination can take from several weeks to several months, which is completely normal for Ravenala. The first leaves are simple and banana-like, and the characteristic fan shape only develops later in the plant's life. Growth is slow at first, but increases gradually as the plant establishes itself.

Utility and collector value

Ravenala subsp. honkondambo is grown primarily as an ornamental and collector's plant. Its value lies in its special botanical status, its rare subspecies classification, and its more elegant forest appearance compared to the common form.

In its natural range, the Ravenala genus has traditionally been used for purposes such as roofing material and water collection, but in cultivation, this subspecies is particularly interesting to dedicated plant enthusiasts who want something rarer and botanically correct.

Ravenala madagascariensis subsp. honkondambo is an obvious choice for the patient grower who wants to follow a rare and striking tropical plant from seed – with an appearance that differs clearly from the classic traveller's palm. Also see our entire large selection of palm seeds.
