VERY RARE

  • Latin name: Strelitzia parvifolia
  • Danish names: Smalbladet Paradisfugleblomst
  • English names: Bird of paradise, narrow-leaved bird of paradise

Strelitzia parvifolia is a very rare and unusual bird of paradise flower from South Africa. While most people are familiar with the classic Strelitzia reginae with its broad, banana-like leaves, Strelitzia parvifolia is particularly interesting due to its narrower and more elegantly upright foliage.

The species is only rarely seen in cultivation and even more rarely for sale, making it especially interesting for collectors of Strelitzia and other exotic plants. It combines strikingly different foliage with the spectacular orange and blue flowers for which bird of paradise plants are famous.

Appearance and growth

Strelitzia parvifolia forms a dense clump of upright leaf stalks from strong underground rhizomes. The most characteristic feature of the plant is the leaves, which are clearly narrower than those of the common Strelitzia reginae. This gives the plant a lighter, more elegant, and almost architectural look.

As the plant ages, it can form several shoots around the parent plant and develop into an attractive group. The long leaf stalks and relatively narrow leaf blades also make the plant appear more open and upright than the broad-leaved Strelitzia species.

Orange and blue bird of paradise flowers

Although the foliage distinguishes Strelitzia parvifolia from many other Strelitzia, the flowers are unmistakably bird of paradise. The characteristic inflorescence consists of a boat-shaped spathe from which vibrant orange sepals and blue petals emerge.

The distinctive shape resembles the head of an exotic bird and is the reason for the name "bird of paradise flower." As with other Strelitzia, blooming requires a well-established plant of a certain age, as well as good conditions with plenty of light and nutrients.

A very rare Strelitzia

Strelitzia parvifolia is one of the Strelitzia that is rarely encountered in general trade. The assortment is usually dominated by Strelitzia reginae and the large Strelitzia nicolai, while the narrower and more unusual forms are significantly more difficult to find.

It is precisely its rarity and different leaf shape that make Strelitzia parvifolia particularly exciting for plant collectors. Even without flowers, it clearly stands out in a collection with its elegant and characteristic foliage.

Difference between Strelitzia parvifolia and Strelitzia reginae

Strelitzia parvifolia is closely related to the classic Strelitzia reginae, and the two share, among other things, the characteristic orange and blue flowering. The clearest difference is seen in the foliage.

While Strelitzia reginae typically develops relatively broad leaf blades, Strelitzia parvifolia has narrower leaves and a more upright appearance. This gives the plant its own character and makes it interesting to grow side-by-side with other Strelitzia. See our full selection of Strelitzia plants.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Thrives best in a very bright and preferably sunny location. Plenty of light promotes vigorous and compact growth.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm conditions during the growing season. The plant should be protected from hard frost and is best grown frost-free through the Danish winter.

  • Soil: Use a nutrient-rich, airy, and well-drained soil. Good drainage is important, as the strong roots should not stand in water constantly. You can use a good potting soil mixed with clay and perlite, or our Ficus soil which is well-suited for Strelitzia.

  • Watering: Water regularly and thoroughly throughout the growing season, but allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in the winter.

  • Fertilizer: Fertilize regularly through spring and summer with a good organic fertilizer. Good access to nutrients helps the plant build strong leaves, roots, and rhizomes.

  • Repotting: Repot as needed when the root system fills the pot. Strelitzia develops strong roots and thrives in a stable pot with good drainage.

  • Overwintering: Best overwintered in a bright and frost-free place. In a cooler winter location, reduce watering and fertilize very sparingly or not at all. Does not tolerate frost.

For the collection of rare bird of paradise flowers

For those who already know the common bird of paradise flower, Strelitzia parvifolia is an opportunity to experience a much more rarely cultivated side of the genus. The combination of the narrow, elegant foliage, the upright growth, and the classic orange and blue flowers makes the plant something quite special.

Strelitzia parvifolia is therefore not just an exotic ornamental plant, but also an exciting collector's plant for those who seek rare Strelitzia and want to experience the variation within this fascinating plant genus.
