Four small snowflake children have descended from the winter sky – or perhaps they are the ones actually making the snow fall?
With wings on their backs and light bodies, they look as if they belong somewhere between the clouds and the first freshly fallen snow. Small, magical winter creatures that may only appear when the air gets cold enough and the world turns white for a moment.
An enchanting paper cutout for the dark months of winter, when the imagination deserves a little more space.
Assemble your own snowflake children
The four snowflake children are assembled from several parts. Cut out the bodies, arms, and wings and join the parts together so that each little figure becomes whole.
Once the snowflake children are finished, they can be hung in the window, from a branch, or left to float among other winter decorations.
Feel free to hang them at different heights so it looks like they are drifting through the air. Perhaps they are on their way down with the first snow of the year – or perhaps they are on their way up to get some more.
Hand-painted Danish paper cutout
The paper cutout is designed by Tall Hat Tales and has a delicate, hand-painted look that gives each of the four snowflake children its own personality.
Unlike the elves and Christmas hearts, the snowflake children are not tied to any specific Christmas tradition. They belong more to the whimsical world of winter and can therefore be allowed to float through the home long after the Christmas decorations have been packed away.
When the snow begins to fall
There is something almost magical about snow.
First comes perhaps a single flake. Then another. And suddenly, the air is full of small white flakes drifting toward the ground and slowly transforming the landscape.
But what look like small white dots from the window are, in reality, ice crystals with marvelous shapes.
Snowflakes form up in the clouds when water vapor freezes around tiny particles. The ice crystals continue to grow on their journey through the cloud, and temperature and humidity help determine how they develop.
Small works of ice art
If you look very closely at a snowflake, you discover something special: ice crystals have a basic hexagonal structure.
Some become simple and star-shaped, while others develop long, delicate branches. Each individual crystal is constantly influenced by the conditions it encounters on its way through the cloud, which is why snowflakes can end up with an incredibly large number of different shapes.
It is almost hard to imagine that something so delicate can arise all by itself high up in a winter cloud.
Or perhaps not entirely by itself.
For who really knows what the four little snowflake children are doing up there?
