FROST TOLERANT
- Latin name: Dicksonia antarctica
- Danish names: Tasmanian tree fern, southern tree fern
- English names: Soft tree fern, Tasmanian tree fern
Dicksonia antarctica is one of the most iconic tree ferns, originating from the humid, temperate forests of Tasmania and southeastern Australia. The species is known for its great robustness, its impressive appearance, and its characteristic, fibrous trunk, which can rise several meters in older specimens. This species is a favorite in exotic gardens as well as terrariums and plant collections, where its lush, tropical expression creates a unique atmosphere.
Appearance and growth
Dicksonia antarctica forms a massive, dark, fibrous trunk that can reach 2–6 meters in height in the wild. Large, feathery fronds that can grow over 2 meters long unfold from the trunk. The fronds are soft, finely divided, and give the plant a nearly prehistoric appearance.
The tree fern grows relatively slowly, but its elegant crown and fairytale-like expression make it a strong focal point in both gardens and large terrariums.
Usage
The species is used both as an ornamental plant in temperate exotic gardens, in greenhouses, and in large terrariums. The high humidity and the large, soft fronds make it particularly prized in rainforest setups, where it provides structure and natural cover for animals.
Its trunk serves as a natural growth medium for mosses, ferns, and epiphytes – both in nature and in terrarium use.
Cultivation and care
- Light: Partial shade to shade – cannot tolerate harsh midday sun.
- Temperature: Thrives at 10–25 °C. Tolerates light frost, but should be protected against prolonged cold.
- Humidity: High humidity is ideal, especially in a greenhouse or rainforest terrarium.
- Soil: Moist, humus-rich, and well-drained soil.
- Watering: Water both the soil and the trunk. The trunk must never dry out completely – this is where the plant absorbs much of its moisture.
- Fertilizer: Use a weak fertilizer during the growing season. Avoid strong fertilizer directly on the trunk.
- Overwintering: In Denmark, it should be kept frost-free or covered during winter. Fronds can be removed as needed, but the trunk must be protected against drying out.
Note
As a tree fern, Dicksonia antarctica is both robust, decorative, and long-lived. It adds a striking, almost fairytale-like touch to any tropical setup and is simultaneously one of the most accessible and reliable tree ferns on the market.
