  • Latin name: Musa thomsonii
  • Danish names: Thomsons banana, Yunnan banana
  • English names: Yunnan banana

Musa thomsonii is a rare and exciting species of wild banana, originating from the humid and mountainous regions of northeastern India, particularly in Assam and around the Himalayan foothills. The plant belongs to the Rhodochlamys section of Musa species, which are known for their colorful flowers and compact growth – and it is considered both a botanical curiosity and an ornamental plant with great potential.

The plant forms upright, robust pseudostems and broad, fresh green banana leaves with slightly wavy margins. Its growth is elegant and lush, and under good conditions, it can reach up to 2–3 meters in height – significantly lower than many commercial banana varieties, making it more manageable in cultivation.

The inflorescence is particularly decorative: it consists of colorful bracts (often reddish-brown to purple) and produces small fruits, which are botanically interesting, though not typically considered edible. The fruits contain many hard seeds, making the plant unsuitable for fruit production – but perfect as an ornamental and for pollination studies.

Cultivation and requirements:
Musa thomsonii requires warmth, high humidity, and sheltered conditions. It thrives best in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil and should be placed in partial shade to full sun – though without drying out. In Denmark, it should be grown in a greenhouse, conservatory, or as a potted plant that is brought inside during winter. The temperature should be kept above 10–12 °C for optimal growth, but it can withstand periods of frost. Although this species is considered cold-tolerant, it still needs some protection in winter if kept outdoors.

Watering must be done regularly during the growing season, and the plant appreciates light fertilization. It has a vigorous root system and should be repotted into larger pots as it grows.

Cultivation from seed:
The seeds are hard and require pre-treatment to germinate. It is recommended to file or nick the seed coat slightly and soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 48–72 hours. Then sow in moist, well-drained seed compost (e.g., coco coir and perlite) and keep at a constant temperature of 25–30 °C. Germination can be irregular and take anywhere from several weeks to several months.

Utility:
Although the fruits are not typically eaten, Musa thomsonii has great value as an ornamental plant and as a genetic resource for banana breeding. In its natural environment, it also plays a role in the ecosystem as shelter and food for insects and birds.

Musa thomsonii is an ideal plant for the dedicated banana collector or the tropical-inspired gardener who wants something different and exotic – with both botanical depth and decorative elegance. A wild banana with character and history.

Seed germination

Lightly scarify the seed with fine sandpaper or a nail file. Then, soak in warm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed-starting mix or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Please note that the seeds can take up to 6 months to germinate!

Childcare

Although it can withstand low temperatures, it is best grown in a pot. If you want to try growing it outdoors, it must be well covered in winter.

- Place in a bright spot with partial sun. Can tolerate more sun when small
- Prefers shelter from the wind
- Good nutrient-rich and well-draining soil
- Fast-growing, so requires plenty of water
- Fertilize well during the growing season
