- Variant: Green
Sugarcane is a grass plant that has been cultivated for centuries for its high sugar content and the subsequent production of cane sugar. The plant is a perennial with a clumping growth habit. It can somewhat resemble pampas grass, although sugarcane is characterized by its leafless stems as the plant matures. The flowers are erect and greyish-white.
It is not actually known for certain where sugarcane originally comes from, but it is assumed to be somewhere in Asia. It is now grown in large parts of the world. There are quite a few different varieties with various colors and purposes. In this case, it is a green variety, which produces green stems.
If you want to try harvesting your sugarcane, this is best done in the autumn. Choose the largest stalk and cut it off close to the ground. The piece closest to the ground is said to contain the most sugar. Cut away leaves and other parts. Now the stalk can be chewed, squeezed, or crushed.
