  • Latin name: Utricularia alpina
  • Danish names: Alpeblærerod, storblomstret blærerod
  • English names: Alpine bladderwort

Utricularia alpina is one of the most spectacular species in the fascinating bladderwort genus. The species originates from Central and South America, where it grows as a terrestrial or epiphytic plant in humid mountain forests and cloud forests. Here, it thrives in moss, humus, and on tree trunks where the humidity remains high year-round.

Unlike the well-known pitcher plants and Venus flytraps, Utricularia alpina does not catch insects above ground. Instead, the plant develops tiny bladders underground or in the moist growing medium. These function as advanced vacuum traps that, in just a few milliseconds, suck in microscopic prey when they touch the trap's trigger hairs. It is one of the fastest movements in the plant kingdom.

Above ground, the plant forms a low rosette of fresh green leaves, while the large white to pale lavender flowers with a yellow center rise elegantly above the foliage. The flowers are among the largest within the genus and make the species particularly popular among collectors.

If you are interested in carnivorous plants, you can also explore our entire collection of carnivorous plant seeds, where you will find Venus flytraps, sundews, pitcher plants, bladderworts, and many other fascinating species.

Cultivation and requirements

Utricularia alpina thrives best in bright, filtered light or light semi-shade and prefers:

  • Moist, airy, and nutrient-poor growing medium
  • High humidity
  • Consistent moisture without drying out
  • Good air circulation

A mixture of live or dried sphagnum moss, perlite, and coarse bark often works well. The species should not be grown in regular potting soil or fertilized, as it is adapted to nutrient-poor conditions.

Unlike many other carnivorous plants, Utricularia alpina should not stand constantly with the pot in water. The growing medium should be kept consistently moist, but airy at the same time.

Always use rainwater, demineralized water, or distilled water.

Cultivation from seeds

Seeds of Utricularia alpina are very small and should be sown directly on the surface of a moist growing medium.

  • Sow without covering with soil
  • Temperature of 20–25 °C
  • High humidity
  • Bright location without direct, scorching sun

The seeds require light to germinate. Germination can take from a few weeks to several months depending on the conditions.

The young plants first develop leaves and later the characteristic underground bladder traps.

Utility and collector value

Utricularia alpina is primarily grown as an ornamental and collector's plant. The large orchid-like flowers combined with the almost invisible vacuum traps make it one of the most fascinating species among carnivorous plants.

For many collectors, it is precisely the contrast between the elegant flowering and the advanced trapping mechanism that makes the species so exciting. The small bladder traps are invisible to the naked eye but function as highly specialized traps for microscopic organisms.

Utricularia alpina is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow one of the most unusual carnivorous plants from seed – a rare species with large flowers, advanced vacuum traps, and high collector value.
