  • Latin name: Ficus americana subsp. andicola
  • Danish names: Andes-figen, amerikansk bjergfigen (unofficial)
  • English names: Andean fig, mountain strangler fig

Ficus americana is a widespread fig species from Central and South America, where it occurs in several different forms and subspecies. It grows from dry forest areas and savannas to higher mountain regions and is known for its flexibility, robust nature, and beautiful, tropical foliage. The subspecies andicola is adapted to higher and cooler regions, typically in mountain areas, and is distinguished by a more compact and robust growth habit than the typical lowland form.

The plant produces beautiful, oval to slightly elongated leaves in a glossy, deep green color. The leaves are thicker and more leathery than those of many other fig species, which makes andicola particularly resistant to drying out, wind, and cooler temperatures. Like other fig species, it has an elegant branching structure and a harmonious growth form, making it suitable both as a houseplant and as a semi-outdoor plant during warm months.

Cultivation and requirements:

Ficus americana subsp. andicola thrives in a bright location, but without the most scorching midday sun. It prefers:

  • Airy, well-draining soil (e.g., our special ficus soil or potting mix blended with perlite)
  • Even moisture during the growing season
  • Good ventilation
  • A minimum temperature of around 10–12 °C

As a mountain-adapted subspecies, it tolerates cooler conditions better than many tropical fig species and can therefore be grown outdoors in summer and early autumn in Denmark, as long as the night temperature does not drop too far. Overwintering should take place in a bright and frost-free area.

The plant is easy to shape, tolerates pruning well, and can be kept both bushy and more tree-like.

Cultivation from seeds:

The seeds are sown in a light, well-draining soil mix and covered only very lightly. Keep the soil moist, but not wet, and maintain a temperature of 22–28 °C. Germination typically takes 2–6 weeks. The small plants grow quickly and develop their characteristic glossy, narrow leaves early on.

Utility value:

As an ornamental plant, Ficus americana subsp. andicola is an obvious choice for plant enthusiasts who want a hardier and more cold-tolerant fig species than many of the classic tropical Ficus types. It is perfectly suited for large pots, conservatories, bright living rooms, and terraces during the summer months.

In nature, it plays – like many fig species – an important role as a food source for birds, insects, and fruit-eating animals, and its presence increases biodiversity in the ecosystems where it grows.

Ficus americana subsp. andicola is a beautiful, robust, and exciting choice for those who want to grow something unusual – a mountain-adapted fig with elegant foliage, a strong nature, and plenty of exotic charm. 🌿

Seed germination

Place the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place them between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a plastic bag and kept in a bright location. After 1 year, they can be planted out. Protect them with straw or spruce branches during the first few winters.

Childcare

Must be grown in a pot, as it cannot tolerate frost

- Place in a bright and sunny location
- Water regularly during the growing season
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Water less in winter
