- Latin name: Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera
- Danish names: Blå viftepalme, blå middelhavsviftepalme
- English names: Blue Mediterranean fan palm, Atlas mountain palm, blue fan palm
Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera is a particularly beautiful blue-grey form of the well-known European fan palm. It originates from North Africa and is especially associated with the dry and sunny landscapes of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, where it grows under conditions of strong sun, limited rainfall, and significant temperature fluctuations.
The most striking feature of this variant is the stiff, fan-shaped leaves, which develop a distinct silver-blue to blue-grey color. The color is due to a waxy layer on the leaf surface, which, among other things, helps the plant protect itself against strong sun and dehydration. In a sunny location, the blue color becomes particularly vivid, giving the plant an almost metallic appearance.
Like the common Chamaerops humilis, it grows relatively slowly and often forms multiple stems from the base. Over time, it can therefore develop into a dense and architectural palm with several crowns. Its slow growth also makes it well-suited for cultivation in large pots for many years.
Along with the Cretan date palm, Phoenix theophrasti, Chamaerops humilis is among the very few palm species that occur naturally in Europe. Var. cerifera, on the other hand, has its natural distribution in North Africa and is of particular interest to collectors due to its very characteristic leaf color.

Cultivation and requirements
The blue fan palm is a robust palm that is naturally adapted to sunny and relatively dry locations. It prefers:
- Full sun – preferably as much sun as possible
- Well-drained soil
- Moderate watering and the ability to dry out slightly between waterings
- A warm and protected location
- Less water during the cooler part of the year
Good drainage is especially important, particularly in winter. A mineral-based and well-drained substrate helps prevent the roots from sitting constantly wet in cool weather.
The species is among the more cold-tolerant palms and is therefore interesting for palm enthusiasts in cooler climates. Established plants can tolerate frost, but hardiness depends, among other things, on the size of the plant, how long the frost lasts, wind conditions, and especially winter humidity. Under Danish conditions, cultivation in a pot with frost-free or cool overwintering is the safest solution. Attempts at planting outdoors should be made in a very protected, sunny, and well-drained location with the possibility of winter protection.
Cultivation from seed
Seeds of Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera can advantageously be soaked in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours before sowing. The water can be changed along the way.
- Sow the seeds in an airy and well-drained sowing medium (alternatively, the baggy method can be used)
- Cover them with approximately 1–2 cm of soil
- Keep the temperature around 22–28 °C
- Keep the soil slightly moist, but not wet
- Be patient – palm seeds can germinate irregularly
- See also our article on germinating palm seeds
Germination can take from a few weeks to several months, and individual seeds can take significantly longer to germinate than the rest. The seed tray or pots should therefore not be discarded just because not all seeds germinate at the same time.
The young plants may initially have relatively green leaves. The characteristic blue-grey color typically becomes more apparent as the plant grows larger and is cultivated in very bright and sunny conditions.
Utility and collector value
The blue fan palm is particularly sought after for its combination of compact growth, good robustness, and spectacular silver-blue leaves. Compared to the common green Chamaerops humilis, var. cerifera has a distinctly cooler and more exotic appearance that goes particularly well with, for example, agaves, yuccas, and other drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants.
For the palm collector, it is also interesting as a palm that does not require tropical conditions year-round. Its origin in the dry mountain regions of North Africa has made it a robust and adaptable plant, which with age can develop into an impressive specimen.
Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera is therefore an obvious choice for those who want to grow a characterful palm from seed – and especially for the collector who loves bluish and silvery plants.
