  • Latin name: Psidium guineense
  • Danish names: Brasiliansk Guava, Sur guava, guineaguava
  • English names: Brazilian guava, sour guava, Guinea guava

Psidium guineense, often called sour guava or Brazilian guava, is an aromatic and compact fruit shrub native to South and Central America and parts of the Caribbean. It differs from the more well-known Psidium guajava by its lower growth habit, smaller fruits, and a fresher, tarter taste, which makes it particularly suitable for juice, marmalade, and jelly.

The plant has a bushy, densely branched growth habit and small, leathery leaves that emit a slightly spicy fragrance when rubbed. In summer, it develops small, fragrant, white flowers, which are followed by round, yellow fruits with a green tinge and a distinct guava aroma. The flesh is cream-colored to pale pink and has a fresh, citrusy taste.

Psidium guineense thrives in full sun and requires a warm and protected location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. It is drought-tolerant once established but appreciates regular watering during the growing season. In Danish conditions, it is not winter-hardy and should therefore be grown in a pot so that it can be moved into a frost-free room for the winter. Overwintering at a minimum of 5–10 °C is ideal.

Utility:
The fruits are smaller than those of Psidium guajava but highly aromatic. They are often used in juice, cordials, jams, chutneys, and desserts – especially where a fresh, tart flavor is desired. In addition, Psidium guineense has been used in traditional medicine for digestive problems and as a natural antiseptic. The leaves contain antioxidants and can be used for tea in some cultures.

Psidium guineense is an exciting and different species of guava that is well-suited for those who want an easy-to-grow, tart fruit variety with a compact growth habit and high utility. A perfect candidate for the edible container garden with a tropical touch.

Seed germination

Pour boiling water over the seeds and let them soak for 24 hours. This helps to break down the hard seed coat. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel inside a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm location.

Childcare

Must be grown in a pot, as it cannot tolerate frost and must therefore be moved indoors during the winter.

- Place in a bright location, preferably in the sun
- Prefers a bit of shelter from the wind
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Water moderately
- Well-draining soil
- Requires less water in winter
