SUPER RARE | THE FAMOUS KOLA NUT
- Latin name: Cola nitida

- English names: Kola nut tree, true kola
NOTE: These are seeds that have already sprouted.
Cola nitida – the mythical kola nut. Cola nitida is a tropical tree with a long and fascinating history – as a sacred plant, a trade commodity, and a source of caffeine. The tree is originally from the humid forests of West Africa, where it is still cultivated and valued for its glossy, leathery leaves, decorative fruits, and – not least – the caffeine-rich nuts hidden inside the star-shaped capsules.
The glossy, reddish kola nuts have traditionally been used as a stimulating chewing gum, as a ceremonial gift, and as an ingredient in the first cola drinks – hence the iconic name. The tree can reach up to 15–20 meters in height under ideal conditions, but it grows slowly and can also be kept more compact in a pot.
Cultivation and requirements:
Cola nitida requires warmth, moisture, and protection from drying out. It thrives best in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and high humidity. In Denmark, it should be grown indoors, in a greenhouse, or in a conservatory – preferably with minimum temperatures above 15 °C all year round.
The tree does not tolerate frost, but with a little patience, it can grow into a beautiful, glistening houseplant or greenhouse tree with an exotic look.
Cultivation from seed:
The seeds are large and should be sown as fresh as possible. They should be soaked in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours before sowing and then planted in a light, moist soil mix (e.g., coconut coir and perlite). Sowing depth approx. 2–3 cm. The temperature should be kept above 22–25 °C, and the soil must not dry out. The seeds usually germinate within 3–6 weeks. Feel free to use a plastic bag or a mini-greenhouse to maintain high humidity.
Utility value:
The kola nuts from Cola nitida contain natural caffeine and theobromine and have traditionally been used as a stimulant, appetite suppressant, and digestive aid. Today, extracts are still used in foods and drinks – but for most, the plant is primarily a cultural and botanical curiosity that brings a piece of Africa's plant world into the home or collection.
An exciting and historic plant for those who love exotic useful plants and the stories that go with them.
