Latin name: Sarracenia oreophila

Danish names: Grøn Fluetrompet, trompetblomst, trompetblad
- English names: Green pitcher plant, mountain pitcher plant
Sarracenia oreophila is one of the rarest and most endangered pitcher plants in the wild and is currently found only in a few isolated areas in Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. It is known for its strong, upright pitchers, its beautiful lime-green color, and its high resistance to cold. The species is considered one of the most robust Sarracenia – perfect for cultivation in temperate conditions, including in Denmark.
The pitchers are wide at the opening, beautifully curved, and often faintly striped or marked in reddish tones. The plant typically produces its largest pitchers in the spring, followed by summer leaves (phyllodia), which are flat and leaf-like. These are used to collect energy through the rest of the season – an adaptation that makes it particularly strong in cooler climates. The flowers are large and pale yellow with the classic Sarracenia shape, hanging down like an open umbrella.
Cultivation and requirements:
Sarracenia oreophila thrives best in full sun, where it develops the largest and strongest spring pitchers. It requires:
- Nutrient-poor soil, e.g., Carnivorous plant soil or sphagnum/perlite
- Rainwater or demineralized water (does not tolerate lime)
- Constantly moist soil during the growing season
- A cold winter dormancy
The species is one of the most cold-tolerant pitcher plants and can overwinter outdoors in Denmark, as long as the roots are not exposed to hard frost. A large pot in a sheltered spot or a cold, frost-free winter location is ideal.
As with other Sarracenia, direct sun is crucial – the more light, the more beautiful and robust the pitchers.
Cultivation from seeds:
The seeds require cold stratification to break seed dormancy. They should be placed in moist sphagnum in a sealed bag and stored for 4–8 weeks at approx. 5 °C. After this, they are sown on top of moist sphagnum and will germinate at 18–25 °C. Germination can be slow and take several weeks, but the seedlings are strong and quickly develop small mini-pitchers.
NOTE: We have already stratified the seeds. So that is not necessary.
Concluding remark:
Sarracenia oreophila is a magnificent and hardy pitcher plant that combines beautiful, upright spring pitchers with a natural ability to cope with cooler climates. A fascinating species for anyone who wants a rare and robust Sarracenia with plenty of character.
- The seeds are small but germinate easily.
