  • Latin name: Psidium guajava
  • Danish names: Guava
  • English names: Common guava, yellow guava, lemon guava, apple guava

Psidium guajava, better known as guava, is a tropical and subtropical fruit shrub or small tree originating from Central America and northern South America. Today, it is grown in many parts of the world for its tasty fruit and compact, decorative growth, which makes it particularly suitable for pots, greenhouses, and conservatories in temperate regions.

The plant has glossy, oval, dark green leaves and a dense, bushy growth habit. In the summer, it produces fragrant white flowers with many stamens, followed by round to oval fruits – typically green or yellow on the outside with pink, white, or red flesh. The guava fruit is sweet, aromatic, and rich in vitamin C, and it is used both fresh and in juices, jams, and desserts.

Psidium guajava thrives in full sun and a warm location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established but appreciates regular watering during the growing season. In Denmark, it cannot overwinter outdoors, but it is well-suited for cultivation in large pots, which can be placed outdoors during the summer months and brought inside for the winter. The plant tolerates short periods of cooling down to just around freezing, but should ideally be overwintered at a minimum of 5–10 °C.

Utility:
The guava fruit is not only tasty – it is also nutritious and widely used in both the food and health industries. The fruit is rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber. Both the leaves and the fruit have been used in traditional medicine for digestion and as a natural antibacterial agent. The young leaves can even be used as tea.

Psidium guajava is an excellent plant for those who wish to combine exotic beauty and utility in one and the same plant. It adds a tropical touch to the garden, patio, or greenhouse – and as a bonus, you get the opportunity to harvest your own guava fruits.

Seed germination

Pour boiling water over the seeds and then let them soak for 24 hours. This helps to break down the hard seed coat. Sow the seeds afterwards in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm spot.

Childcare

Must be grown in a pot, as it cannot tolerate frost and must therefore be moved indoors during the winter.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably in the sun
- Prefers some shelter from the wind
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Water moderately
- Well-draining soil
- Requires less water in winter
