FROST TOLERANT

  • Latin name: Dicksonia fibrosa
  • Danish names: Gylden træbregne, træbregne
  • English names: Golden tree fern, tree fern

NOTE: The seeds/spores are incredibly small. Almost like dust.

Dicksonia fibrosa, also known as the golden tree fern, is a compact and robust fern species native to New Zealand. It is characterized by its beautiful, densely packed green fronds that form an elegant crown atop a sturdy, brown trunk covered in fibrous roots, which have given the plant its name.

This slow-growing tree fern can reach a height of up to 3 meters, but its compact growth and hardy nature make it particularly well-suited for smaller gardens or pots. Dicksonia fibrosa is also known for its unusual resistance to cold and can tolerate temperatures down to about -10 °C, making it a good choice for temperate climates. However, it will benefit from some winter protection if it is to be kept outside all year round.

The plant thrives best in partial shade to shade and requires consistently moist soil to stay healthy. It is also recommended to keep the trunk moist, as it acts as an important part of the plant's water absorption. Its ability to create a lush and exotic look makes it an obvious choice for both woodland gardens and as a "centerpiece" in shady corners.

Seed germination

Fill a plastic container halfway with moist sphagnum moss. Spread the "seeds" evenly over the soil (they must not be covered). Close the lid of the plastic container. If necessary, poke a few holes in the lid. Place the container in a bright, warm spot.

NOTE that the spores are very small
