  • Scientific name: Mimosa diplotricha
  • Danish names: Kæmpe rør mig ej, krybende mimosa, kæmpe sensitiv plante
  • English names: Giant sensitive plant, creeping mimosa

Mimosa diplotricha is a fast-growing, tropical legume native to South America, but is now naturalized in many warm and humid regions across the world. It is closely related to the well-known Mimosa pudica, and like it, is known for its sensitive leaves that fold up when touched – a fascinating characteristic that makes it popular among plant enthusiasts.

This species differs, however, in its larger and more vigorous growth. Mimosa diplotricha is a thorny, climbing or creeping plant that can quickly cover large areas under ideal conditions. The leaves are fine and pinnate with a fresh green color, and the plant blooms with small, spherical inflorescences in pinkish-purple shades. After flowering, it forms flat pods containing seeds in large quantities.

Due to its rapid growth and prolific seed production, it is considered an invasive species in many tropical areas.

Mimosa diplotricha requires warmth, high humidity, and plenty of sun to thrive. It prefers well-drained, slightly moist soil and responds well to regular watering and pruning. In temperate climates, it is best grown as an annual or in a greenhouse, where it can be overwintered frost-free at temperatures above 10–12 °C.

Note: The plant has strong thorns along the stems, which should be taken into account when handling it. It is not suitable for cultivation in places where children or pets have access.

Utility and application:
In certain regions, Mimosa diplotricha has been used as a green manure or ground cover plant in controlled agricultural systems, but its aggressive growth makes it difficult to manage without care. As an ornamental plant, it is primarily interesting for its reactive leaf movement and decorative, fuzzy flowers.

Mimosa diplotricha is a plant for the experienced and curious collector who wants something unusual and lively in their collection.
