- Latin name: Elettaria cardamomum

Danish names: Kardemomme, grøn kardemomme, ægte kardemomme
-
English names: Green cardamom, cardamom, true cardamom
Cardamom (the true one) originates from Southern India, where it grows in the shade of tropical forests. However, it is now cultivated in many parts of the world. Back home, it actually does very well as a houseplant, as it requires a constantly high temperature and shade. It can be difficult, however, to get it to bloom. The plant itself is green and grass-like, with long stems and alternating leaves. If you are lucky, you might succeed in getting the plant to bloom in the spring with white flowers. Pollination can be aided by brushing the flowers with a small paintbrush.
NB: Unfortunately, cardamom is easily attacked by pests, especially mealybugs and scale insects. It is therefore a good idea to have neem oil in stock and to check the plant regularly.
