Classic "kravlenisser" (climbing elves) and woven Christmas hearts are two small pieces of Danish Christmas gathered in one cozy paper craft.
The little elves climb, hang, and balance on the characteristic red and white Christmas hearts, bringing a touch of old-fashioned Christmas spirit into the home. A nostalgic motif perfect for December and for those who appreciate Christmas decorations with history and tradition.
Let the elves move in for Christmas
Cut out the little climbing elves and Christmas hearts and let them find their own spots around the home. They can sit on the edge of a shelf, peek out from a windowsill, or become part of a larger Christmas display.
Climbing elves are especially cozy because they don't need a fixed spot. They can pop up in different places throughout December, creating little surprises among books, plants, and Christmas decorations.
The paper craft can also be a lovely little gift for someone who enjoys cutting and creating their own Christmas decorations.
Hand-painted Danish paper craft
The paper craft is designed by Tall Hat Tales and features a charming, hand-painted aesthetic, where small details give each elf its own personality.
The combination of climbing elves and classic woven hearts makes the motif distinctly Danish, evoking thoughts of the Christmas decorations that have been cut, woven, and brought out again every December for generations.
The woven Christmas heart and Hans Christian Andersen
The woven Christmas heart is considered a special Danish Christmas tradition today, but its history goes back further than one might think.
Hans Christian Andersen is associated with the oldest known woven paper heart. The heart is believed to have been made around 1860 and is preserved today at the H.C. Andersen House in Odense. His heart did not have the handle we normally associate with Christmas hearts, and it is not known for sure if it was even intended as Christmas decoration.
Woven paper hearts later became part of the Danish Christmas tradition and evolved into the familiar hearts with handles, which could be hung on the Christmas tree and filled with, for example, pepper nuts or sweets.
The little woven heart has thus become one of the most recognizable symbols of Danish Christmas and a fine partner for the classic climbing elves.
