FROST TOLERANT

  • Latin name: Drosera intermedia
  • Danish names: Liden soldug
  • English names: Oblong-leaved sundew, spoonleaf sundew

Drosera intermedia, also known as the oblong-leaved sundew, is a carnivorous plant native to Denmark, where it grows in nutrient-poor, moist areas such as bogs and marshy meadows. It is easily recognizable by its elongated, spatula-shaped leaves covered in glistening tentacles. These tentacles secrete a sticky substance that effectively traps small insects, which the plant then digests to extract essential nutrients.

The oblong-leaved sundew is a winter-hardy species that survives cold months by forming compact winter buds (hibernacula), making it suitable for outdoor cultivation in Denmark. It is part of the natural ecosystem in swampy areas and contributes to the biological balance by controlling insect populations.

For optimal growth, Drosera intermedia requires a bright location and constantly moist, acidic soil. It thrives best in dead or living sphagnum moss, possibly mixed with perlite to ensure good drainage. Watering should be done with rainwater or demineralized water to mimic its natural habitats.

This species is an exciting addition to any collection of carnivorous plants and can be grown either outdoors in suitable conditions or in specialized terrarium environments.
