Passiflora edulis f. edulis is the classic purple passion fruit that most people know from the supermarket. It is originally native to South America, but today it is grown all over the world for its aromatic and nutritious fruits. As a plant, it combines beautiful flowers, lush foliage, and tasty fruits – a perfect union of ornament and utility.
The flowers are large and eye-catching with white petals and a corona of purple filaments that provide an exotic and alluring appearance. After flowering, the round, purple fruits form, which ripen to a deep purple color. The pulp is juicy, sweet-tart, and filled with small, edible seeds. The flavor is intense and tropical – a mixture of citrus, mango, and pineapple.
Cultivation and requirements:
Passiflora edulis f. edulis thrives best in warm and sunny conditions with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. It requires regular watering and prefers not to dry out completely. As a climbing plant, it needs support, and it can quickly grow large and covering.
In Denmark, it is best suited for a greenhouse, conservatory, or large pots, where it can be moved inside during the winter. It does not tolerate frost and must be kept at a minimum of 10 °C.
Cultivation from seed:
The seeds can advantageously be soaked in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours before sowing. Alternatively, one can use passion fruit juice, as the seeds can be difficult to germinate. They are sown in a light, well-drained seed mix and kept at 22–28 °C. Germination typically takes 2–8 weeks, but can vary. Once the plants germinate, they grow quickly and soon form climbing shoots.
Utility value:
The fruits of Passiflora edulis f. edulis are rich in vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants. They are often used fresh, in smoothies, desserts, salads, or as a flavoring in drinks and sauces. In addition to its fruits, the plant is highly valued for its exotic flowers, which make it an ornamental feature in both greenhouses and gardens.
Passiflora edulis f. edulis is an obvious choice for those who want to grow their own passion fruits and at the same time enjoy one of the most beautiful climbing plants the tropics have to offer.
