  • Latin name: Adansonia madagascariensis
  • Danish names: Madagascar-baobab
  • English names: Madagascar baobab, Grandidier's baobab

Adansonia madagascariensis, also known as the Madagascar baobab, is an impressive and distinctive tree species native to the dry, tropical regions of Madagascar. This baobab is known for its unique growth habit, where its thick, bottle-shaped trunk stores water to survive dry periods. The tree can reach great heights and gain enormous width, and its large, bulging trunk gives it a nearly mythical appearance.

The Madagascar baobab is a relatively rare species in the baobab family and differs from the better-known African baobabs in its specific location and adaptation to local climatic conditions. The plant is hardy against heat and drought and can survive in the harsh environments on the island, where rain only falls during certain periods.

Adansonia madagascariensis is suitable for cultivation in both greenhouses and outdoors during the summer months. It is a slow-growing plant that requires a sunny location and well-drained soil to thrive. It does not tolerate frost, but can be grown as a container plant that is brought indoors during the winter in colder climates.

This baobab is an impressive sight with its large, oval-shaped leaves and can, during the flowering season, develop large, white flowers that add a tropical charm to the garden or greenhouse. It is ideal for those who want a unique and exotic element in their plant collection.

Seed germination

The seeds have a very thick shell that must be broken slightly before sowing. You can either sand them until you reach the white inner shell. You can also try to "crack" the outer shell off using, for example, a pair of pincers. Then, soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between damp paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm spot.

Childcare

The tree requires a pot so that it can be brought indoors during the winter. Unfortunately, it cannot withstand frost.

- Place in full sun and warmth
- Does not tolerate temperatures below 10 degrees
- Good nutrient-rich, well-draining soil
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Generally sparse watering (seedlings, however, prefer a little extra water)
- Very little water and no fertilizer during the winter
