- Latin name: Selenicereus grandiflorus
- Danish names: Nattens Dronning
- English names: Queen of night, night-blooming cereus, large-flowered cactus, sweet-scented cactus
The Queen of the Night is a cactus from Mexico and Central America. It is now found in large parts of the world as an ornamental plant. The name, Queen of the Night, comes from the fact that its large and magnificent flowers (unfortunately) only last for a single night. They open around sunset and close again around sunrise.
The plant itself is a cactus with 5-8 ribbed stems. It develops long, well-developed aerial roots and is sometimes grown as an epiphyte. Its care is somewhat atypical for a cactus, as it requires good, nutrient-rich soil and should be kept somewhat moister during the growing season. It is a climbing or trailing plant that performs very well in hanging baskets. However, one should be aware that the stems can become very long.
Growing from stems:
Propagation is easy via cut stems. Let the stems "dry" for 5-7 days. Afterwards, place them horizontally in moist soil, pressed slightly into the soil, but without being completely covered. Place the pot with the stems in a bright and moist location. After a while, new plants will sprout from the sides of the stems.
