  • Latin name: Musa sikkimensis "Red Tiger"
  • Danish names: Red tiger banana, ornamental banana
  • English names: Red Tiger Banana

  • Variant: Red Tiger

Musa sikkimensis ‘Red Tiger’ is one of the most spectacular and hardy banana plants available. Originating from the Himalayan region, it is known for its eye-catching leaves featuring dark red tiger stripes against a green background. This combination makes it a beautiful ornamental plant that adds an exotic touch to the garden, greenhouse, or large pots on the patio.

Appearance and growth

The plant can reach an impressive height of 3–4 meters under favorable conditions, though it is usually somewhat smaller when grown in pots. The large, decorative leaves are broadly green with striking red stripes, giving the plant a unique tropical look. Unlike many other banana plants, Musa sikkimensis can handle cooler temperatures and is therefore one of the most popular banana species among European gardeners.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Thrives best in full sun to partial shade.
  • Temperature: Can tolerate light frost down to about –5 °C, but should be covered or brought inside during cold winters.
  • Soil: Nutrient-rich, well-draining soil with good moisture.
  • Watering: Requires regular watering during the growing season – the soil should be kept moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize generously throughout the growing season to support rapid growth and large leaves. Use a good organic fertilizer.
  • Overwintering: In mild climates, the plant can overwinter outdoors with protection. Alternatively, it can be kept in a cool, frost-free location during the winter months.

Musa sikkimensis ‘Red Tiger’ is an exciting choice for anyone wanting an exotic and robust banana plant with special ornamental value. Ideal for both collectors and gardeners who dream of something a little extra and special.

Childcare

This is one of the hardier bananas and, with a little protection, can withstand down to 5 degrees Celsius below zero. However, the safest approach is to move the plant to a cool, frost-free area during the winter. In the autumn or after flowering, the "mother plant" may die back. New plants will, however, emerge from the roots.

- Place in a bright spot, but out of direct sunlight
- Keep the soil moist during the growing season
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Good, nutrient-rich soil that is kept slightly moist
