THE WORLD'S MOST COLORFUL TRUNK
- Latin name: Eucalyptus deglupta
- Danish names: Regnbue-eukalyptus, Regnbue eukalyptus
- English names: Rainbow eucalyptus, Mindanao gum
NOTE: The seeds are very small
Eucalyptus deglupta is without a doubt one of the most spectacular trees in the world. It originates from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, where it grows naturally in tropical lowland forests. It is the only eucalyptus species found naturally in the northern hemisphere – and it stands out for its almost surreal bark.
The trunk is smooth and sheds in strips, revealing underlying layers of fresh bark in vivid colors – first light green, then blue, purple, orange, and finally reddish-brown. The result is a vibrant rainbow effect, making the tree a true work of art in nature.
The tree can become very large in its native land – up to 60–70 meters – but in pot culture and outside the tropics, it grows more moderately and can be kept in check with pruning. The leaves are long, narrow, and freshly green with a characteristic eucalyptus scent.
Cultivation and requirements:
Eucalyptus deglupta requires warmth, high humidity, and plenty of space. It thrives best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. The species does not tolerate frost and should therefore be grown in a greenhouse, conservatory, or as a potted plant in Denmark, where it can be moved indoors during the cold season.
With its rapid growth, it can quickly form an impressive trunk and beautiful leaves – even as a young plant, it is highly decorative.
Cultivation from seed:
The seeds are sown superficially on moist, well-drained seed compost and must not be completely covered, as they need light to germinate. Keep at 20–25 °C and with even moisture. Germination usually occurs within 2–4 weeks. The seedlings are fast-growing and should be repotted as they develop.
Utility:
In its native countries, Eucalyptus deglupta is used as timber, and it is known as "Mindanao gum". For plant collectors and enthusiasts, however, it is primarily an ornamental plant, grown for its spectacular, color-changing trunk.
Eucalyptus deglupta is one of the most eye-catching and unique trees you can grow – a living painting that changes expression as the bark sheds and new colors emerge.
