Hylocereus costaricensis, better known as red dragon fruit, is a tropical climbing cactus from Central America. It is famous for its spectacular fruits with pink to red skin and an intensely red, sweet flesh filled with small black seeds. The fruit is both decorative and tasty – rich in antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins.

Appearance and growth

This species is a fast-growing climbing cactus that forms triangular, green stems with aerial roots, making it suitable for cultivation on trellises, fences, or large pots with support. It blooms with enormous, white nocturnal flowers, often called "moonflowers," which only open for one night but are among the largest and most beautiful in the cactus world. After pollination, the spectacular red fruits develop.

Usage

Dragon fruit is popular in the kitchen for its fresh and slightly sweet taste. It can be eaten raw, used in fruit salads, smoothies, or desserts. The red variety is particularly valued for its intensely colored flesh and high content of antioxidants.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Requires full sun to partial shade for optimal growth and fruit production.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warmth (20–35 °C) and does not tolerate frost.
  • Soil: Well-drained, sandy, or slightly acidic soil. We use our cactus soil
  • Watering: Water regularly during the growing season – the soil should be slightly moist, but never waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter.
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize with a cactus fertilizer during the growing season to promote flowering and fruit development.
  • Pollination: Flowers open at night and are pollinated in nature by bats and moths. When growing in a greenhouse, hand pollination may be necessary.

Hylocereus costaricensis is a spectacular and useful cactus that combines ornamental value, dramatic flowers, and delicious tropical fruits. Perfect for collectors, greenhouses, and fruit enthusiasts who want to try their hand at growing their own dragon fruit.
