  • Latin name: Passiflora princeps (syn. Passiflora racemosa)
  • Danish names: Rød passionsblomst
  • English names: Scarlet passionflower, red passionflower

Passiflora princeps is a rare and striking passionflower native to the tropical regions of Brazil. It is perhaps best known by its former name, Passiflora racemosa. It distinguishes itself from many other species in the genus with its intense, deep red flowers, which appear almost like vibrant jewels amidst the dark green foliage. With its rare appearance and exotic origin, it is a coveted plant for collectors and passionate growers of Passiflora.

The flowers have a simple yet elegant structure with petals in a vibrant carmine red and a decorative center with yellow and white contrasts. Although they are not as complexly structured as many other passionflowers, they possess an alluring beauty that makes the species unique. The dark green leaves are three-lobed, giving the plant a dense, lush appearance.

Cultivation and requirements:

Passiflora princeps thrives best in warm, humid conditions with plenty of light, but without the harshest midday sun. It should be grown in well-drained, humus-rich soil and requires regular watering so that the soil is always slightly moist.

As a climbing plant, it requires support in the form of a trellis or strings, and it can quickly cover a large surface area under the right conditions. It is not frost-tolerant and should be grown in Denmark in a greenhouse, conservatory, or as a potted plant that can be moved indoors during the winter. Minimum temperature 10–12 °C.

Cultivation from seed:

The seeds should be soaked in warm water for 24–48 hours before sowing to soften the seed coat. Generally, passionflower seeds can be difficult to get started; a common trick is therefore to use passion fruit juice instead of water. Sow in a light, well-drained seed compost and keep at 22–28 °C. Germination can be irregular and take from a few weeks to several months, so patience is necessary.

Utility:

Although Passiflora princeps is not known for edible fruits, it is highly valuable as an ornamental plant. It is often used in hybridization to introduce red flower colors to new varieties. For collectors and plant enthusiasts, it is a botanical curiosity – a passionflower that radiates intensity and rarity.

Passiflora princeps is the perfect choice for the dedicated collector who wants an unusual and spectacular passionflower that stands out from the more common species.

Germination of seeds

Pour lukewarm water over the seeds and then leave them to soak for 24 - 48 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm spot.

Passion fruit seeds can generally take a long time to germinate. You can try to speed up the process by carefully filing the seeds with a nail file or fine sandpaper before soaking them.
