SUPER RARE!
- Latin name: Strelitzia parvifolia
- Danish names: Smalbladet paradisfugleblomst
- English names: Narrow-leaved bird of paradise
- After many years, we have finally succeeded in sourcing seeds of this super rare bird of paradise!
Strelitzia parvifolia is clearly one of the rarest species in the bird of paradise genus and is only rarely seen in cultivation. The species originates from South Africa, where it grows in dry and rocky areas with hot summers and mild winters.
The plant is closely related to the more well-known species Strelitzia reginae, Strelitzia nicolai, and Strelitzia juncea, but has a very distinct expression. While Strelitzia reginae develops broad banana-like leaves, and Strelitzia nicolai can become an impressive tree several meters tall, Strelitzia parvifolia has significantly narrower leaves and a more elegant, upright growth habit.
The species is considered by many botanists to be closely related to Strelitzia juncea, and some forms can appear as a natural link between the broad-leaved and the almost leafless species. This very variation makes the species particularly interesting for collectors.
The characteristic flowers have the well-known bird of paradise appearance with orange and blue colors, which have made the genus famous worldwide. Flowering is, however, typically only achieved on older plants.
Cultivation and requirements
Strelitzia parvifolia thrives best in full sun to light shade and prefers:
- Well-drained and nutrient-rich soil (we recommend our Calathea & Maranta soil)
- Consistent watering during the growing season
- Good air circulation
- Warm and bright conditions
A well-drained Mediterranean or tropical plant soil is ideal for cultivation. For optimal growth, an organic fertilizer can be used to advantage throughout the growing season.
The species tolerates short-term light frost, but in Denmark it is best grown as a potted plant, greenhouse plant, or conservatory plant. In winter, it should be overwintered in a bright and frost-free location.
As an adult, the plant is relatively drought-tolerant, but it develops best with regular watering during the growing season.
Cultivation from seeds
Seeds of Strelitzia parvifolia germinate best under warm conditions. For best results, we recommend:
- Start by removing the orange "tuft"
- Soaking in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours
- Sowing in a well-drained soil mix
- Temperature of 22–28 °C
- Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet
Germination typically occurs within 4–12 weeks, but individual seeds may take longer. The young plants grow moderately and gradually develop their characteristic leaves.
As with other birds of paradise, it requires patience to grow the plant to a flowering size, but the reward is one of the plant kingdom's most spectacular flowers.
Use and collector value
Strelitzia parvifolia is primarily grown as an ornamental and collector's plant. Its rarity in cultivation makes it particularly attractive among enthusiasts of exotic plants and birds of paradise.
For collectors of Strelitzia species, it is an obvious supplement to more well-known species such as Strelitzia reginae, Strelitzia nicolai, and Strelitzia juncea. See our entire collection of bird of paradise seeds here.
It is precisely the combination of rarity, elegant growth, and the iconic flowers that makes the species so sought after. Many plant enthusiasts will likely never encounter it in ordinary garden centers or nurseries.
Strelitzia parvifolia is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow one of the rarest birds of paradise from seed – an exclusive species with elegant growth, botanical interest, and high collector value.
