TOLERATES LIGHT FROST
  • Latin name: Passiflora coactilis
  • Danish names: Tauso passionsfrugt
  • English names: Tauso, Maracuja passionflower

Passiflora coactilis is a plant that originates from the cooler regions of South America, Colombia and Ecuador. Here, it grows well above sea level (up to 3600 meters). It is therefore a plant that can handle low temperatures. The flowers are incredibly beautiful, elongated, and pink. The fruits are round, yellow, and edible.

If the plant is exposed to frost, it will die back. In the spring, however, it will sprout again from the roots. If you want to try planting this species outdoors, a sheltered location is recommended. Possibly against a south-facing house wall. Before the frost sets in, it is also a good idea to protect the "stem" with straw or pine branches.

- Produces edible fruits

Germination of seeds

Pour lukewarm water over the seeds and then let them soak for 24–48 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Passion fruit seeds can generally take a long time to germinate. You can try to speed up the process by carefully filing the seeds with a nail file or fine sandpaper before soaking them.
